About

Have you ever wondered where the word “canola” comes from?  Or how much oil can be produced from one bushel of canola seed?  What about the nutritional aspects of canola oil and how it compares to other cooking oils?  Have you ever thought about how to explain canola to a child, friend, relative, or even the general consumer?

The Canola Learning Centre provides the information and resources to answer these questions and more!

Educational Resources

While the ACPC has always had activity elementary booklets related to canola, the development of curriculum-based materials addressing general agriculture issues is a first for the ACPC, as well as a first for the Agriculture community as a whole.  In 2007, the ACPC introduced the following curriculum-based resources for the Alberta school system:

  • “It all Begins with the Seed” for students in K-3 focuses on the growing of plants
  • “It all Begins with the Seed” for students in Grades 4-6 expands the knowledge of canola through curriculum-relevant exercises in science, social studies, mathematics, etc.
  • Sustainability” is a week-long series of lessons to be integrated within the Grade 7 Science.
  • Climate Change” is a week-long series of lessons to be integrated within Grade 10 Science.
  • Urbanization” is a week-long series of lessons to be integrated within Grade 7 Social.

These resources along with more lessons, activities for students, teachers and adult youth leaders will be posted on the future website www.canolalearningcentre.com.  However, until this website is launched, these resources are available free of charge by calling 1-800-551-6652 or emailing web@canola.ab.ca.
